A skilled tactician knows that framing the field of battle is important to seizing control once the fight starts. Ambuscader augment their martial skill with a knack for surprise and planning.
Proficiencies
Ambuscaders are proficient with simple weapons, as well as light armor and bucklers. In addition, if this is this character’s first level in any class, they may select a martial tradition of their choice.
This alters proficiencies and replaces overseer.
Blended Training
Whenever the ambuscader would be able to select a skill talent from their mastermind levels, they may instead select a combat talent. The ambuscader uses their operative modifier as their practitioner modifier.
This alters skill expertise.
Engagement Expertise (Ex)
At 4th level, the ambuscader learns to take better advantage of surprise rounds and improve the effectiveness of their allies in these situations. If the ambuscader can act in a surprise round, they may select a single ally who can act in this surprise round (including themself). That ally may take a full round’s worth of actions (swift action plus either a move and standard action or a full-round action) rather than just a move or standard action.
At 10th level, a creature selected by engagement expertise gains an additional instance of martial focus which is lost at the end of the surprise round.
If the creature cannot gain martial focus, they instead gain a +3 insight bonus to their attack rolls, damage rolls, saving throws, AC, and CMD for 1 round (creatures may choose to gain this alternate bonus in place of gaining martial focus).
At 16th level, a creature selected by engagement expertise may treat their initiative roll as a 20 for a surprise round, regardless of their initiative. Their normal initiative roll is used in subsequent rounds.
If two or more characters possess this ability, their initiative determines the order in which they act.
If the creature is prevented from acting in the surprise round, this ability has no effect.
At 18th level, when using engagement expertise, the ambuscader may select a number of creatures up to their operative modifier so long as they know a major motivation of each target.
This replaces spur action and puppet master.
