Acting as a mentor to those around you is an admirable role, but on the battlefield, you need to be open to learning as much as your allies are from you. These captains are able to use their observations of their allies’ actions to help their own, and focus their abilities in combat rather than in social situations.
Deadly Acumen
At 2nd level, the captain gains the Weapon Focus feat as a bonus feat and a +1 bonus to initiative checks. This initiative bonus increases by 1 at 6th and 10th level.
This replaces factotum.
Combat Strategy
The captain uses his allies’ tactics as inspiration for his known. At 3rd level, the captain gains a strategy pool–he begins the day with his strategy pool empty, but it can contain an amount of strategy points equal to his operative modifier (minimum 1). Once the captain spends 1 minute or longer outside of combat, his pool empties.
The captain can gain 1 point of strategy in the following ways, although he cannot gain strategy from the same method more than once per round, and he must be in combat to gain strategy.
- Better Technique: An ally succeeds at an attack roll or combat maneuver against an enemy.
- Greater Stance: An ally successfully avoids an attack from a hostile creature (such as an attack roll missing them, or succeeding a saving throw against an area of effect ability).
- Superior Positioning: An ally moves 10 or more feet to gain a bonus due to battlefield positioning (such as cover, flanking, or getting into a higher position).
A method involving the captain’s allies requires him to see the action. He does not consider himself his own ally for these effects.
For every 4 advisor levels he possesses beyond 3rd, his strategy pool maximum increases by 1.
The captain can spend strategy to enhance his own abilities in combat. Each of the following options can only be used once per round, and is usable as a free action usable outside of his turn (unless otherwise stated).
- Desperate Synergy: The captain can spend 3 points of strategy whenever he would lose an action in place of an ally who has taken a synergised action, allowing him to keep the action spent.
- Improve Stance: When the captain is attacked, they can spend any amount of strategy to gain an equivalent dodge bonus to his AC against the attack.
- Inspired Adrenaline: Whenever the captain attempts an attack roll or saving throw, he can spend any amount of strategy to gain an equivalent competence bonus to the attempt.
- Readjust: The captain can spend 3 points of strategy to reroll a saving throw after the result has been revealed, taking the new result even if it is worse.
- Spontaneous Synergy: The captain can spend 2 points of strategy to coordinate synergy with himself and another ally.
- Sudden Reposition: As a swift action, the captain can spend 2 points of strategy to move up to half his speed.
This replaces undermine strategy and capitalize.
Improved Strategies
At 5th level, the captain’s methods of gaining points of strategy are improved to those that share his rapport, causing the captain to gain 2 points of strategy from these methods instead of 1 when the ally meets an additional prerequisite.
- Better Technique: The attack results in a critical hit or reduces a hostile creature to 0 or fewer hit points.
- Greater Stance: The ally avoids an attack of opportunity, or they succeed a saving throw and suffer no damage instead of partial damage from an ability they possess (such as evasion).
This replaces collaborative leverage.
Grand Strategy
At 9th level, if the captain begins his turn with 0 points of strategy, he gains 1 point of strategy, plus 1 additional point of strategy for every 5 advisor levels beyond 9th he possesses.
This replaces grand lecture.
Peerless Training
At 11th level, the captain applies the bonus granted by Weapon Focus to all other weapons within the same fighter weapon group (or one of his choice if it is part of multiple). Additionally, the captain gains the Weapon Specialization feat as a bonus feat (even if he does not meet the prerequisites), choosing the original weapon chosen with the Weapon Focus feat.
This replaces peerless leverage.
