Thaumaturge Alternate Class Features
Occulted Visions
The thaumaturge’s eyes are stained pitch-black by what they have attempted to see–the physical manifestation of their font of power.
At 1st level, the thaumaturge gains (1) the Dark sphere as a bonus sphere, and (2) the Clouded Vision oracle curse, treating their thaumaturge level as their oracle level when determining its effects.
Whenever the thaumaturge uses forbidden lore, instead of suffering the normal penalties from backlash, the thaumaturge instead reduces the range of their senses by 5 feet (this includes all forms of vision, such as blindsense and blindsight, or other means the thaumaturge may benefit from). A sense reduced to 0 feet provides no benefits to the thaumaturge; if all the thaumaturge’s precise senses would be reduced to 0, the thaumaturge is blinded and unable to use forbidden lore until the penalties are removed (a precise sense includes normal vision, blindsight, etc.; see Spheres of Guile Sensory Precision for more information). A thaumaturge using forbidden lore with a Dark sphere ability only has a 5% chance of suffering backlash.
At 5th level, the thaumaturge’s vision functions normally and is not impeded by their oracle curse but only while within the area of a gloom they created (essentially allowing for “normal” sight but only within a gloom).
At 7th level, the thaumaturge gains the following invocation:
- Shared Vision: At 7th level, if the thaumaturge suffers backlash when using forbidden lore, they may pass their penalty off to another creature within 30 feet. The thaumaturge suffers backlash as normal, but the target must succeed at a Will save or be blinded for a number of rounds equal to 1/2 the void gazer’s caster level (Will negates).
This ability alters forbidden lore and replaces the channel punishment invocation.
