Erudite souls are monks who focus their monastic training on critical thinking. Although more astute and critical of the world than their fellow monks, erudite souls still hold their monastic teachings close to their hearts.
Trade Tradition
If this is this character’s first level in any class, the erudite soul may select a trade tradition of their choice, and have a competent trade rank.
This replaces the monk’s normal class skills.
Skill Expertise (Ex)
The erudite soul is a Trained operative, gaining skill spheres and talents as described in Using Spheres of Guile.
This replaces all bonus feats, but may be altered or replaced by other archetypes.
Erudite (Ex)
The erudite soul gains the Investigation sphere as a bonus sphere at 1st level, in addition to a bonus skill talent from the Investigation sphere at 4th, 12th, and 20th level.
This replaces stunning fist.
Analytical Edge (Ex)
The erudite soul uses his Intelligence modifier instead of his Wisdom when determining the benefits of his AC bonus and ki pool class features.
Additionally, the erudite soul can use his Intelligence modifier instead of the ability score modifier used to determine his Sense Motive bonus, as well as his bonus for any skill check attempted as part of using the analyze ability.
This alters AC bonus and ki pool.
Sagacious Ki (Ex)
At 3rd level, an erudite soul’s ki extends to both his mind and body, granting him keen powers of observation and deduction that far surpass the abilities of others. The erudite soul gains the inspiration class feature (Pathfinder Roleplaying Game: Advanced Class Guide), except as described here. He does not get uses of inspiration; instead, he may spend points from his ki pool to use the ability. He may add his inspiration die to any Appraise, Perception, Sense Motive, or Survival check without spending from his ki pool (instead of the skills that are normally free to improve with the inspiration class feature).
Additionally, the erudite soul can choose an investigator talent instead of a ki power.
This replaces fast movement.
Note: If the erudite soul gains an inspiration pool from another source, he adds his monk level to his investigator level when calculating his inspiration pool (and may still only add the associated ability score modifier once).
Evaluating Strike (Ex)
The erudite soul’s list of style strike options are replaced with the following evaluating strike options.
This alters style strike, but may be altered or replaced by other archetypes.
Adapt
The erudite soul learns from the target’s movements and actions in an attempt to gain insight into his own struggles. If the attack hits, the erudite soul may attempt a new saving throw against an effect or condition that was caused by the target, as long as the effect had a saving throw initially. Success has its usual effect, but failure changes nothing.
Defensive Spin
The erudite soul can use this style strike normally.
Force
The erudite soul strikes hard and fast, forcing the target to move and adapt quickly. If the attack hits, the target must immediately move 5 feet in any direction chosen by the erudite soul as a free action that is taken outside of their turn. This movement provokes attacks of opportunity, and is deducted from the target’s movement speed on their next turn.
Press
The erudite soul targets specific joints and muscles, weakening the foe. If the attack hits, the target becomes sickened for a number of rounds equal to his operative ability modifier (minimum 1). If the target is already sickened, the creature must succeed at a Fortitude saving throw or be nauseated for the first 1 round of the duration.
Pry
The erudite soul strikes various pressure points, extending his ki to test the target’s physicality. If the attack hits, he may attempt to analyze the creature as a swift or immediate action (either simple or detailed, as long as he pays the costs associated with it).
Relax
The erudite soul exploits a missed attack, establishing a false sense of security. If the attack misses, he rolls the next Bluff, Sense Motive, or analyze check attempted against the target of his flurry of blows twice, taking the highest result. This roll must be attempted within 1 minute of the missed atack.
Test
The erudite soul learns from his mistakes and uses it to his advantage. If the attack misses, he gains a +2 insight bonus to the next attack made in his flurry of blows, increasing by 1 per 5 monk levels he possesses.
Watch
The erudite soul uses his understanding of ki to be able to track the target’s movements, even if he cannot see them. If the attack hits, he gains blindsight for up to 60 feet, but only against the target of this evaluating strike. The blindsight lasts for 1 round, plus 1 round per 5 monk levels he possesses.
