Weapon and Armor Proficiency

A mascareri gains no new proficiencies with weapons or armor.

Bind Spirit

Levels in the mascareri prestige class stack with the character’s binder level for all purposes, including binding checks, calculating the effectiveness of granted abilities, and determining the character’s maximum spirit level. If the mascareri possesses levels of pactmaker, half of the class’s level stacks with pactmaker levels to determine the number of spirits that the character can bind with at once.

Analyze Spirit (Sp)

A mascareri is a master of spirits and can identify their presence and powers with ease. At 1st level, a mascareri can use detect pact spirits† as a spell-like ability at will. The caster level for this effect is equal to the mascareri’s binder level.

Mask Pool (Su)

When a mascareri seals a pact with a spirit using the Reserve Spirit feat, she also creates a mask pool. A mascareri’s mask pool possesses a number of points equal to her level + her Charisma modifier (minimum 1). While she has at least 1 mask point remaining, a mascareri gains an insight bonus on Bluff and Disguise checks equal to half of her binder level. Other mascareri class features require her to spend points from the mask pool in order to obtain their benefits.

A mascareri only possesses a mask pool while bound to a reserve spirit. If her pact with the reserve spirit ends, all points within the mask pool are lost, as are any other ongoing effects created using the mask pool. When a mascareri seals a pact with a new reserve spirit, she gains any lost points (but not any points she previously spent).

Corpse Mask (Su)

At 1st level, a mascareri can create realistic masks from the corpses of Small or Medium animals or humanoids. In order to do so, the mascareri must spend one minute crafting a special, occult seal and 10 minutes creating the mask from within this seal. When the ritual is complete, the mascareri creates a mask bearing the exact, individual details of the corpse’s face. As a full-round action, a mascareri can spend attach the mask to her face and spend 1 point from her mask pool in order to transform into the specific, individual creature depicted by her corpse mask for 10 minutes, otherwise functioning as alter self (if the mask depicts a humanoid) or beast shape I (if the mask depicts an animal). These minutes don’t need to be used consecutively, but they must be spent in 1-minute increments.

The caster level for this effect is equal to the mascareri’s binder level. Removing a corpse mask is a move action, and when removes, the mascareri returns to her true form. A mascareri doesn’t take any penalties to her Disguise check to appear as a specific, individual creature regardless of the creature’s age or gender. After donning a corpse mask, a mascareri can spend 1 additional mask point as a swift action in order to add 10 more minutes to the duration of her current corpse mask.

If the mascareri doffs her corpse mask before its duration ends, any remaining minutes invested into the mask remain for up to 24 hours or until the number of mask points in her mask pool refreshes. A mascareri can possess a number of corpse masks equal to her level, and she can destroy a previous mask in order to create a new one. A mascareri mask has hardness 0 and a number of hit points equal to the mascareri’s level.

Mask Talent

At 2nd level, a mascareri gains a mask talent. The mascareri gains an additional mask talent at 4th level and every two levels thereafter. A mascareri can only select a mask talent once unless otherwise specified.

Ancient Tongue (Su)

A mascareri with this talent can spend 1 mask point as a swift action in order to gain the ability to speak with all of her reserve spirit’s favored allies, functioning as tongues. The caster level for this effect is equal to the mascareri’s binder level. This ability does not allow the mascareri to communicate with creatures that don’t speak a language.

Confuse Spirit (Su)

A mascareri with this talent can spend 1 point from her mask pool as a standard action in order to suppress the bond between a binder within 30 feet of the mascareri and one of its bound spirits. If the target fails a Will saving throw (DC 10 + the mascareri’s level + her Charisma modifier), all of the major granted abilities belonging to one randomly determined spirit that the target is bound to become suppressed for 1d4 rounds. If the mascareri has successfully identified one of the target’s bound spirits using Knowledge (planes), she can target that specific spirit with this ability instead of targeting a random spirit. After using this talent, it becomes expended for 5 rounds.

Disguise Self (Sp)

A mascareri with this talent can cast disguise self as a spell-like ability by spending 1 point from her mask pool as a standard action. The caster level for this effect is equal to the mascareri’s binder level.

Dismiss Pact Spirits (Sp)

A mascareri with this talent can cast dismiss pact spirits as a spell-like ability by spending 1 point from her mask pool as a standard action. The caster level for this effect is equal to the mascareri’s binder level. A mascareri must be at least 4th level before selecting this talent.

Extended Corpse Mask (Su)

When a mascareri with this talent spends a mask point to use one of her corpse masks, that mask functions for 20 minutes instead of 10 minutes and any additional mask points spent to add minutes to a corpse mask add 20 minutes to the corpse mask’s duration instead of 10 minutes.

Extra Corpse Mask (Su)

The mascareri with this talent increases the total number of masks that she can possess by 1. A mascareri can select this talent multiple times.

Feat

A mascareri who selects this talent gains an pact feat as a bonus feat. She must meet the feat’s prerequisites, if any.

Imitate Legend (Su)

When a mascareri with this talent attempts a binding check in order to seal a pact with a spirit, she can make a Perform (oratory) check against the spirit’s binding DC before making her binding check. If this check succeeds, the spirit treats the mascareri as one of its favored allies for the purpose of determining the totem bonus on binding checks that the mascareri receives, if any.

Mind Shield (Su)

A mascareri with this talent gains a constant mind blank effect, except the resistance bonus that she gains on Will saves against mind-affecting effects is equal to her level. The caster level for this effect is equal to the mascareri’s binder level. A mascareri must be at least 8th level before selecting this talent.

Occult Eye (Sp)

A mascareri with this talent can cast occult eye† as a spell-like ability by spending 1 point from her mask pool as a standard action. The caster level for this effect is equal to the mascareri’s binder level. A mascareri must be at least 4th level before selecting this talent.

Shrink Mask (Sp)

A mascareri with this talent can cast shrink item as a spell-like ability at will, but she can only target corpse masks and living masks with her spell-like ability.

Spiritbound Mask (Su)

When a mascareri with this talent uses the Reserve Spirit feat to seal a pact with a spirit, she can spend 1 mask point in order to create a mask and bind the spirit to that mask instead of her soul. In effect, a mascareri with this talent increases the number of reserve spirits that she can seal a pact with using the Reserve Spirit feat by 1; one spirit is bound to her soul and the other to her spiritbound mask. A mascareri can only exchange a spirit for the reserve spirit that is within her mask while she is wearing the mask that the reserve spirit is bound to. Donning or removing a spiritbound mask is a full-round action. A mascareri must be at least 4th level before selecting this talent.

Expanded Design (Su)

At 3rd level and every two levels thereafter, a mascareri selects one mask design. Each mask design adds to the list of creatures that the mascareri can create corpse masks from as well as the potency of those masks.

At 3rd level, the mascareri can choose from the following mask designs.

Improved Animal

All corpse masks that the mascareri creates that depict animals function as beast shape II. In addition, the mascareri can construct corpse masks from Tiny and Large animals.

Monstrous Humanoids

The mascareri can create corpse masks from Tiny, Small, Medium, or Large monstrous humanoids, otherwise functioning as monstrous physique IIUM.

Vermin

The mascareri can create corpse masks from Small and Medium vermin, otherwise functioning as vermin shape Ium.

At 5th level, the mascareri adds the following mask designs to the list of designs that can be selected.

Dragon

The mascareri can create corpse masks from Medium dragons, otherwise functioning as form of the dragon I.

At 7th level, the mascareri adds the following mask designs to the list of designs that can be selected.

Magical Beasts

The mascareri can create corpse masks from Small and Medium magical beasts, otherwise functioning as beast shape III.

At 9th level, the mascareri adds the following mask designs to the list of designs that can be selected.

Greater Dragons

All corpse masks that the mascareri creates that depict dragons function as form of the dragon III. In addition, the mascareri can construct corpse masks from Huge dragons. A mascareri must possess the dragons and improved dragons designs before selecting this design.

Improved Giants

All corpse masks that the mascareri creates that depict humanoids with the giant subtype function as giant form II. In addition, the mascareri can construct corpse masks from Huge humanoids with the giant subtype. A mascareri must possess the giants design before selecting this design.

Improved Magical Beasts

All corpse masks that the mascareri creates that depict magical beasts function as beast shape IV. In addition, the mascareri can construct corpse masks from Tiny and Large magical beasts. A mascareri must possess the magical beasts design before selecting this design.

Living Mask (Su)

At 10th level, a mascareri can create corpse masks out of still-living creatures. The process of creating a living mask is identical to creating a corpse mask except the ritual must be performed on a helpless creature. After the ritual has been completed, the creature must succeed on a Will save (DC 10 + 1/2 the mascareri’s binder level + the mascareri’s Charisma modifier) or become transformed into a mask, functioning as polymorph any object with a +10 bonus to the spell’s duration factor. The caster level for this effect is equal to the mascareri’s binder level. A living mask perfectly depicts the polymorphed creature’s face, and a mascareri can use a living mask as she would a corpse mask to transform into that specific, individual creature. Additionally, each time a mascareri spends a mask point on a living mask, she chooses one feat that the creature possesses and gains the benefits of that feat while wearing the living mask. She doesn’t need to meet the feat’s prerequisites in order to gain its benefits. A mascareri can only gain the benefits of one feat at a time using this ability; if she selects a second feat, the benefits of any existing feat that she has selected immediately end. If a feat has a daily use limitation (such as Stunning Fist), any uses of that feat while wearing the living mask count toward that feat’s daily limit.

A living mask is treated as a corpse mask when determining the total number of masks that a mascareri can possess. A creature that has been transformed into a living mask is aware of its surroundings out to a range of 30 feet, similar to an intelligent item, possessing the same senses that it has as a creature. A living mask cannot speak or perform actions (including purely mental actions), but while a mascareri is wearing a living mask that she created, she can speak with the mask as if she possessed telepathy. She can choose to allow her living mask to reply or suppress its ability to communicate with her in this fashion at her leisure.
