Occult Priest (Cleric Archetype)

Deity: If an occult priest worships a deity, she must worship a deity with the Occult domain.

Bind Spirit: An occult priest may seal pacts with otherworldly entities known as spirits. In order to summon a spirit, the occult priest must learn the spirit’s ceremony, constellation, personality, and seal by completing its four Knowledge Tasks; see Researching the Spirit for more information on this process. An occult priest begins play having completed all four Knowledge Tasks for one 1st-level spirit of her choice that belongs to her chosen constellation (see tunneled domain below).

Each day, an occult priest may bind one spirit to her soul using pact magic; see Performing a Pact Ritual. The spirit’s level may not exceed the occult priest’s maximum spirit level, which is limited to 1st-level spirits at 1st level. At 4th level and every three cleric levels thereafter, the occult priest’s maximum spirit level increases by 1, to a maximum of 6th-level spirits at 16th level.

An occult priest possesses a binder level equal to her level. The DC to resist an occult priest’s supernatural powers is equal to 10 + 1/2 the occult priest’s level + the occult priest’s Charisma modifier. This ability replaces channel energy.

Spontaneous Casting: An occult priest can channel stored spell energy into a domain spell that she did not prepare ahead of time. The occult priest can “lose” any prepared spell that is not an orison in order to cast a spell that is on her domain’s domain spell list. This ability replaces one of the cleric’s domains and alters spontaneous casting.

Tunneled Domain: At 1st level, an occult priest chooses one constellation that is associated with her domain, as listed below. She may only seal pacts with starless spirits and spirits belonging to her chosen constellation. All other constellations are barred to her. This ability counts as having the tunneled lore class feature for the purpose of meeting binder secret and feat prerequisites.

The constellations (and their associated cleric domains) are detailed below. An occult priest who chooses the Occult domain may select any constellation as her chosen constellation.

  • Scholar (Air, Artifice, Earth, Fire, Knowledge, Travel, Water)
  • Skull (Darkness, Death)
  • Thief (Chaos, Charm, Trickery)
  • Tree (Plant, Repose, Sun, Weather)

Domain Lore: At 2nd level and every 2 levels thereafter, an occult priest selects one domain spell from any of her deity’s domains and adds it to the list of domain spells that she can spontaneously cast. The occult priest must be able to prepare and cast a spell in order to select it with this ability. Once a spell has been chosen, it cannot be changed. At 20th level, an occult priest can spontaneously cast any spell from any of her deity’s domain spells.
