Pactsworn Champion (Paladin Archetype)

Pactsworn champions are found serving binder communities by protecting their secrets and their citizens from harm.

Bind Spirit: A pactsworn champion may seal pacts with otherworldly entities known as spirits. In order to summon a spirit, the pactsworn champion must learn the spirit’s ceremony, constellation, personality, and seal by completing its four Knowledge Tasks; see Researching the Spirit for more information on this process. A pactsworn champion begins play having completed all four Knowledge Tasks for one 1st-level spirit of her choice.

Each day, a pactsworn champion may bind one spirit to her soul using pact magic; see Performing a Pact Ritual. The spirit’s level may not exceed the pactsworn champion’s maximum spirit level, which is limited to 1st-level spirits at 1st level. At 4th level and every three paladin levels thereafter, the pactsworn champion’s maximum spirit level increases by 1, to a maximum of 6th-level spirits at 16th level.

A pactsworn champion possesses a binder level equal to her level. The DC to resist a pactsworn champion’s supernatural powers is equal to 10 + 1/2 the pactsworn champion’s level + the pactsworn champion’s Charisma modifier.

This ability replaces smite evil 1/day (or smite good 1/day for an antipaladin) and the paladin’s spells class feature. A pactsworn champion does not gain any spells or spellcasting ability, does not have a caster level, and cannot use spell trigger and spell completion magic items.

Righteous Binding: A pactsworn champion may only seal pacts with spirits with an alignment within one step of his own.
