Mechanical Compression

The talents in this section are kept separate from one another due to the individual complexity of each effect, their reliance on terminology and rules from distinct magic spheres, and the possibility that only some of these advanced talents may be appropriate for any given setting due to their far-reaching lore implications.

GMs may wish to compress the number of talents required for engaging in subjects of fertility and pregnancy by combining multiple related talents into a single utility magic talent that grants the benefits of all related talents that the caster meets the prerequisites for. Some examples are listed below

Fertility Magic is an Advanced Utility Talent from the Life Sphere that grants the taker access to any talents from among Alter Fertility, Birth Control, Divine Fertility, and Fertility Restoration that they meet the prerequisites for.

Midwife’s Arcana is an Advanced Utility Talent from the Life Sphere that grants the taker access to any talents from among Accelerate Gestation, Artificial Womb, Parthenogenesis, Prenatal Configuration, and Womb Transfer that they meet the prerequisites for.

Alteration Sphere Advanced Talents

Alter Fertility [utility]

Prerequisites: Alteration Sphere

You may apply the following trait options to your forms. You may choose to have the fertility-altering effects only apply in conjunction with certain targets, such as increasing or decreasing one’s fertility with a specific partner. In this case, this talent can discern between partners to the same degree that a Protection sphere glyph can discern between different targets.

Enhance Fertility: The target gains a bonus to its conceiving checks equal to 5% per caster level. If your caster level is at least 10, this talent can make two or more creatures with this trait fertile with each other, no matter how different their species are.

Reduce Fertility: The target suffers a penalty to its conceiving checks to 5% per caster level (minimum 0%).

Prenatal Configuration [utility]

Prerequisites: Alteration Sphere

You may instantaneously shape the nature of a fetus in the womb of a target within range of your shapeshift. You may cause the target fetus to become the race of any of the parents or a hybrid of them. You may also cause the target to gain specific physical traits such as the eye color, hair color, or nose shape from either parent. It’s not possible to turn the fetus into a god or undead being with this spell.

Creation Sphere Advanced Talents

Artificial Womb [utility]

Prerequisites: Creation Sphere (Fleshcraft (advanced, material)), caster level 10th

You may create an artificial womb or alter a target to grant it an artificial womb in which a fetus may grow if prematurely removed from a uterus. This does not grant the target any new means of becoming pregnant, but grants it a womb into which a fetus can be introduced (through the Womb Transfer Warp Sphere talent or the Parthenogenesis Creation sphere talent). A fetus has a 100% chance to survive transfer into an artificial womb. The artificial womb can be shaped from or placed inside an unliving object (like a box, urn, or melon) or a living creature (a tree, animal, or sentient being; sex is not important). When the fetus is fully gestated, the artificial womb or whatever object or creature hosts it may give birth as if it were naturally capable of doing so (see the childbirth rules from page 180 of the Book of Passion).

You may spend 2 additional spell points when creating an artificial womb, in which case the artificial womb lasts for 1 week per caster level. If the duration of this effect should expire before the child is born, treat it as a premature birth.

Parthenogenesis [utility]

Prerequisites: Creation Sphere (Create Materials (advanced), Fleshcraft (advanced, material), Lengthened Creation), Enhancement sphere (Animate Object (enhance), Bestow Intelligence (enhance), Bestow Life (advanced)), Life sphere, caster level 15th.

You may spend 3 spell points and 1 hour to impregnate a touched artificial womb or willing creature capable of carrying a child. The caster can choose if the child is going to have only the incubating creature’s traits, only the caster’s traits, or both. The baby has the same chances to be an half–outsider as if there was an outsider among its known ancestors (20%)

Divination Sphere Advanced Talents

Divine Fertility [utility]

Prerequisites: Divination Sphere

You divine the presence of fertile creatures within range. After one rounds of concentration, you can tell if each creature in range is fertile or not. A second round determines the degree of fertility (usually given as a percentage), and a third round determines if any supernatural or magical effects are currently affecting the target’s fertility. You may make an immediate Spellcraft check to identify any such effects upon a creature’s fertility with a +5 circumstance bonus to the Spellcraft check.

If you spend an additional spell point, you identify when the next fertile moment is going to come for any creatures or plants within range and how long it will last for each. A “fertile moment” lasts usually a week for plants, a day or two for animals, and 1d4 hours for humanoids. Within the predicted time a creature has a 100% chance of conceiving, but the moment could not be easy to use. If a creature is sterile, the reading gives no result.

You may select this talent a second time, in which case it gives you additional insight into a creature’s gestation.

1st round: You divine the presence of a fetus in the wombs of any creatures within range.

2nd round: You determine the number, stage of development and general physical shape of each fetus (the last can be important in case of hybrid creatures or shapeshifting mother or children).

3rd round: You discern the precise physical shape, sex and health state of each fetus, discerning any diseases or other physical conditions on them. This allows you to discern any of the fetus’ probable future ability scores.

Life Sphere Advanced Talents

Accelerate Gestation [utility]

Prerequisites: Life Sphere, Time Sphere

You may spend 2 spell points and 1 minute to alter gestation time for a pregnant creature within range of your cure, making the pregnancy progress by 1 month for every hour for 1 hour per caster level or progress at half speed for 1 week per caster level. If the pregnancy is accelerated, the creature will give birth when the equivalent time is passed to carry its progeny to term (for example, a just conceived human fetus will be born after 9 hours, while a 7–months fetus will be born after 2 hours). The delivery is treated as normal (see Aging Effects). The fetus keeps growing at a rate of 1 month per hour after the birth if the spell’s effect is not dismissed early. The spell has no effect if cast on an already born baby.

If the pregnant creature would give birth due to the reduction in time or they are already giving birth, this talent will induce labor and birth in a pregnant creature as if the normal time of birth had come.

When you use this talent, you may attempt to immediately begin birth for a pregnant target. If less than half of the pregnancy has progressed, the use of the talent will cause a miscarriage as per the rules. If the pregnancy is beyond the 20th week (or equivalent time), the creature is born as per the normal birth rules. It will be very small (–1 on all ability scores for every month early) but it will not suffer bad effects and will be able to survive as if born full term. It will not die even if it has 0 or less in an ability score, but it dies immediately if it suffers any damage. The infant slowly catches up in ability and size until it becomes a full, normal newborn by the time it should normally be born.

Fertility Restoration [utility]

Prerequisites: Life Sphere (restore health)

When restoring a target’s body, your restore cures natural infertility caused by disease, poison, or scar tissue from a cesarean birth, damage to the testicles, or other similar wounds. If the infertility was caused by a disease, poison, or curse, you must make an MSB check against the DC of the disease, poison, or curse that caused the infertility.

This talent does not restore lost tissue, so cannot be used to heal those who have been castrated (such as a eunuch or a target who has undergone a hysterectomy)—a regenerate spell or use of the make whole talent is required to heal an individual who has been castrated.

Sometimes a creature is born with congenital defects that render them infertile. Such intrinsic damage is beyond the scope of most healing spells. If the damage is purely physical, then a regenerate spell or use of the make whole talent can be used to entirely repair the defect. If the issue is genetic, only a wish or miracle can restore the individual to full fertility.

Protection Sphere Advanced Talents

Birth Control (Aegis) [utility]

Prerequisites: Protection Sphere

You ward the target against conception for 1 day. This spell emulates the effects of spermicide or a diaphragm (caster’s choice). However, unlike most birth control methods, this spell is considered to have a 100% rate of success. This aegis cannot be sacrificed to use (succor) talents

Warp Sphere Advanced Talents

Womb Transfer [utility]

Prerequisites: Warp Sphere (Unseeing Teleport)

You may target fetuses with your teleport as separate targets from the pregnant target carrying them and may target any fetus carried by a pregnant target you can target with your teleport. A fetus can be teleported in the open, or into another womb that you may target within range. A fetus or empty womb is considered willing if the mother is considered willing. A fetus teleported into the open dies if it can’t survive alone.

A fetus teleported into the womb of a non-pregnant creature has a 5% chance per caster level to survive and resume gestation. A subject with a fetus (living or dead) teleported into their womb takes 1d10 damage for each month of fetus’ gestation unless the caster succeeds at an MSB check (DC 10 + 1 for each month the fetus has gestated).

This talent can be used for an emergency delivery if the fetus is in distress, but there are also stories about children born from trees and animals (or other artificial magic wombs; see magic womb) and queens giving birth to beasts or monsters.

If you possess the swap places talent, you may exchange fetuses in different wombs.
