Pact Magic Arcanist Exploits

Exploits

The following exploits can be selected by any arcanist.

Binder Secret

An arcanist can select a binder secret in place of an arcanist exploit. She must meet that binder secret’s prerequisites, if any. An arcanist must possess the Amateur Pactmaker feat† or the bind spirits class feature before selecting this arcanist exploit.

Occult Backlash (Su)

An arcanist can spend 1 point from her arcane reservoir as a standard action in order to make a melee touch attack. If she hits and her target is bound to a spirit, that target suffers 1d6 points of damage + the arcanist’s Charisma modifier, plus an additional 1d6 points of damage for every 2 levels beyond 1st (to a maximum of 10d6 at 9th level). The major granted ability of the target’s highest-level spirit that is not expended or suppressed is also suppressed for 1d4+1 rounds. It can attempt a Fortitude saving throw to prevent its granted ability from being suppressed.

Pact Disruption (Su)

The arcanist can temporarily disrupt the bond between a binder and her spirit by expending 1 point from her arcane reservoir and succeeding at a dispel check against the spell, as dismiss pact spirits†. Unlike dismiss pact spirits, this exploit has a range of touch and affects only the touched creature. In addition, the target may attempt a Will save to negate the effect. This ability suppresses a spirit (and its granted abilities) for a number of rounds equal to the arcanist’s Charisma modifier (minimum 1). This ability doesn’t suppress any effects created by the spell. At the end of this duration, the spirit returns, and if the spirit’s major granted ability was expended, the suppressed rounds count against the number of rounds that the granted ability was expended. This ability has no effect on a pact made with the Permanent Pact feat†.

See the Occult (Su)

The arcanist can see occult auras. If she expends 1 point from her arcane reservoir, for 1 minute she instantly recognizes occult auras and effects (as detect pact spirits†). During this time, she is treated as if she had studied each aura for 3 rounds and she treats her Knowledge (arcana) skill check as if she had rolled a 15 on the d20. In addition, if she touches a magic item with a binder level during this time, she can immediately identify its properties using Spellcraft without needing to spend 3 rounds examining the object. If an enemy possesses the object, the arcanist must first succeed at a melee touch attack to identify the item. An arcanist must have detect pact spirits† in her spellbook in order to select this exploit.

Greater Exploits

The following arcanist exploit can be selected by any arcanist.

Occult Dissonance

Whenever the arcanist uses the occult backlash exploit, she can spend 2 points from her arcane reservoir instead of one. If she does, the target becomes affected by banish pact spirits† in addition to the exploit’s usual effects. The arcanist must have occult backlash to select this exploit.
