Grimoire of Lost Souls
$37.99

Artifacts are mystic items with unfathomable power. Unlike normal magic items, artifacts are not easily destroyed and impossible for PCs to create or purchase. Instead of construction information, each artifact lists one possible means by which it may be destroyed.

An artifact is often the center of a whole campaign, whether the PCs wish to utilize its powers to accomplish their goals, solve its mysteries, or destroy it entirely.

Ring of Shifting Smiles

Aura strong necromancy; CL 20th
Slot ring; Price — gp; Weight

Description
The ring of shifting smiles is a modest iron band fitted with a cubic slab of lodestone that rests in an ornamental, lemniscate filigree. When the ring is worn, an image of the wearer appears on all of the lodestone’s faces, smiling.

As a standard action, the wearer can remove this face and rotate it to the left, making her image younger, or to the right, making her image older. For each leftward rotation she makes, the wearer becomes one age category younger (minimum Infant). For each rightward rotation she makes, the wearer becomes one age category older (maximum Venerable). The wearer ages (or regresses) at a rate of one age category per round until she reaches the chosen age, at which point the engravings on the ring of shifting smiles alter to match the wearer’s current age. This is a physical aging effect.

The effects of the ring of shifting smiles are instantaneous; even after the ring is removed, the wearer’s age does not return to normal. In order to return to her true age, the wearer must rotate the ring of shifting smiles as appropriate, be targeted by another instantaneous aging effect, or return to her original age the natural way.

Destruction
While wearing the ring, a creature must set herself to Venerable and eat a solar lotus. She must repeat this process for each age category until, as an Infant, another assists her in eating the final solar lotus, at which point the lodestone crumbles away into dust. When this happens, the creature’s memories and experiences are likewise destroyed; she returns to infancy instantaneously and must live her life again anew.

Sliver of the Wyrmkin Amulet

Aura strong occult; BL 20th
Slot neck; Price — gp; Weight

Description
A sliver of the Wyrmkin Amulet is one of fourteen fragments of an ancient artifact known as the Wyrmkin Amulet. In an age long past, the Wyrmkin Amulet was created by the Empire as a weapon of mass destruction. Forged using hundreds of souls, tortured to breaking, the congealed mass of spiritual energy that resulted from this torment was a then-new spirit bound forever to the amulet known as Taios the Wyrmkin. After using the amulet’s power to annihilate 90% of the world’s frehmin population, the gods ripped the Empire from reality, sunk their island capital beneath the waves, and shattered the Wyrmkin Amulet, scattering each fragment across time and space, locking each to a specific place and moment so they would never be rejoined.

Any character that wears a sliver of the Wyrmkin Amulet is immediately bound to the spirit Taios; this pact counts against the total number of spirits that the character can be bound to (minimum 1) and lasts while the sliver is worn and for 24 hours after it is removed. The wearer receives Taios’s capstone empowerment, but she also suffers Taios’s physical sign and personality influences. In addition to Taios’s standard personality influences, the wearer suffers Taios’s personality influence whenever she unequips a sliver of the Wyrmkin Amulet.

Although a sliver of the Wyrmkin Amulet is considered a neck slot magic item, a creature in possession of multiple slivers can wear all of them in her neck slot simultaneously. When she does so, the wearer gains the ability to alter reality to her whims. If she possesses at least two slivers of the Wyrmkin Amulet, the wearer can expend Taios’s major granted ability for 10 rounds in order to cast any 1st-level spell of her choice as a spell-like ability. If she is mythic, the wearer can use this ability to cast mythic spells or to augment any other spell that she casts using Taios’s major granted ability by spending the appropriate amount of mythic power. For every two additional slivers of the Wyrmkin Amulet that she possesses, the maximum spell level that she can cast using this ability increases by 1, to a maximum of 7th level spells if she possesses all fourteen slivers of the Wyrmkin Amulet. If a spell appears on multiple spell lists, use the higher of the two spell levels listed for the spell when determining how many slivers of the Wyrmkin Amulet the wearer needs to cast it using Taios’s major granted ability.

As the slivers of the Wyrmkin Amulet are reunited, they begin to protect their wearer with powerful enchantments. If the wearer possesses at least three slivers of the Wyrmkin Amulet, it grants her a +1 enhancement bonus to her natural armor bonus to AC, which increases by +1 for every two additional slivers that the wearer obtains, up to a maximum enhancement bonus of +5 when she possesses eleven slivers. When she possesses thirteen slivers, the amulet grants her the benefits of the immortality binder secret†.

Destruction
The slivers of the Wyrmkin Amulet are incredibly difficult to destroy, having survived the wrath of the gods themselves during a forgotten age. In order to destroy the slivers of the Wyrmkin Amulet, they must first be reassembled and blessed by the power of the gods who originally destroyed it. Then, the restored Wyrmkin Amulet must be brought to the one place that the gods cannot tread, the Positive Energy Plane, and brought before whatever all-powerful entity makes that plane its dominion. Only the power of this ancient being can possibly hope to dissolve the Wyrmkin Amulet permanently.
