These strange conjurers, known as soul binders, are versed in capturing a small part of a creature’s soul; not enough to harm it, but just enough to create a distant mirror of the creature. These captured souls grow in power alongside the soul binder, who is able to twist and change these souls to their whims and desires.
This archetype requires sphere summoner.
Conjuration Mastery
A soul binder gains the Conjuration sphere as a bonus sphere at 1st level, and uses his class level as his caster level for this sphere. This stacks normally with caster levels gained from other sources.
Capture Soul (Sp)
At 1st level, a soul binder can capture fragments of a creature’s soul to serve him in his endeavors. As a standard action, the soul binder can spend 1 spell point and target a creature within his Conjuration sphere summon range that has been dead for no longer than 1 minute to absorb aspects of the creature’s soul, capturing it and storing it within his soul repository. This ability does not damage or interrupt a creature’s soul in any way, and does not disrupt abilities that rely on it .
A captured soul retains its appearance when captured, granting a +10 bonus to any checks made to impersonate that creature (this bonus does not stack with similar bonuses granted from mimicking a creature’s appearance, such as the disguise self spell), but does not have the knowledge of what it knew in life.
This replaces summon mastery from the sphere summoner archetype.
Soul Repository (Su)
Through arcane ritual or strange phenomena, soul binders have the unnatural ability to store lesser souls within his own soul, and may call them forth to do his bidding. The soul binder can hold a maximum of two captured souls within his soul repository at one time (including those gained through talents), plus an additional soul for every 5 summoner levels he possesses.
A captured soul functions as a Conjuration sphere companion, gaining one bonus (form) talent for every 4 summoner levels the soul binder possesses (in addition to the free (form) or (type) talent as part of gaining the companion). These talents (and other options granted to the captured soul) must reflect abilities the original creature possessed (for example, a dragon should possess the Draconic Creature talent).
If the soul binder gains a Conjuration sphere companion, he may choose to have it function as a captured soul within his soul repository. If a captured soul gained this way is replaced with another captured soul, it returns to functioning as a normal Conjuration sphere companion. If the soul binder attempts to acquire a captured soul that would exceed this maximum, he must choose a captured soul to replace with the new soul (with any talents invested into the replaced captured soul being retrained immediately to benefit the new captured soul).
The soul binder may only have a single captured soul summoned as a Conjuration sphere companion at a given time, but reduces the spell point cost to summon their captured souls by 1 (minimum 0). If the soul binder attempts to summon a captured soul while another is summoned, the previously summoned captured soul is dismissed.
This replaces eidolon from the sphere summoner archetype.
Binder’s Evolutions (Su)
At 2nd level and every 4 levels thereafter, the soul binder selects a binder evolution from the following list. Some binder’s evolutions have the evolve descriptor, allowing him to choose a single captured soul he possesses to grant additional benefits, chosen when you first gain the binder evolution. A captured soul can only benefit from a single evolve evolution at one time, but may be applied to a different captured soul through an 8 hour ritual. If the captured soul would be replaced permanently, the soul binder chooses a different captured soul to benefit from the evolve evolution.
This replaces aspect and greater aspect from the sphere summoner archetype and bond senses, maker’s call, merge forms, and transposition class features.
Expanded Conjuration
The soul binder gains a feat with the Conjuration sphere as a prerequisite as a bonus feat, or a bonus talent from the Conjuration sphere. This evolution can be chosen multiple times, gaining an additional feat or talent each time.
Favorite Soul (requires 6th level) [evolve]
The chosen captured soul increases their Hit Dice by 1.
Fuse Soul (requires 16th level)
Whenever the soul binder would summon a captured soul, he may choose to summon it as a full-round action and choose another captured soul to summon both creatures’ souls into one physical body. This acts as if both chosen captured souls are fused, as the Alteration sphere Fusion advanced talent. Note: Much like an advanced talent, this evolution is available subject to the GM’s discretion.
Improved Soul Capture (requires 12th level)
The soul binder can use his capture soul ability on any dead creature, and he is not restricted dependant on how long they have been dead for.
Perpetual Companions
All captured souls within the soul binder’s soul repository gain the Lingering Companion (form) Conjuration talent as bonus talent.
Persistent Summons
Whenever a captured soul is targeted by an effect that would banish or otherwise dispel them, any checks associated with the effect are rolled twice, taking whichever result is more beneficial to the soul binder.
- Enduring [evolve]: Whenever a hostile creature would banish or otherwise dismiss the captured soul, they must also succeed at a magic skill check against the soul binder’s magic skill defense at the end of their next turn. If the creature fails, the dismissed captured soul returns to the square it was originally dismissed. If the creature succeeds, the captured soul remains banished.
Rapid Summoning (requires 6th level)
The soul binder may spend 2 spell points as a swift action to summon a captured soul for 1 round for every 5 summoner levels he possesses.
- Efficient [evolve]: The summoned captured soul instead lasts 1 round for every 2 summoner levels he possesses.
Spellbound (requires Magical Companion talent) [evolve]
The chosen captured soul may choose a casting tradition, instead of being limited to the natural casting tradition. If the captured soul possesses the mage companion archetype, he instead gains two bonus magic talents as bonus talents.
Transpose Soul (requires 6th level)
As a standard action, the soul binder chooses a captured soul he has summoned, replacing them with a different captured soul. The newly summoned captured soul remains for the same duration as the original, and costs no spell points to summon (unless the original summon required concentration, and the soul binder wishes to allow the captured soul to persist without concentration by spending a spell point).
- Emergent [evolve]: The chosen captured soul can be transposed (as in, the replaced creature or the creature replacing the chosen creature) as a swift action, or as an immediate action by spending a spell point.
Vicious Binder (requires 10th level)
Whenever the soul binder uses his capture soul ability, he can spend an additional two spell points to attempt to trap part of the creature’s soul within the captured soul (Will negates). If the creature fails their saving throw, any attempts to raise the creature must succeed at a magic skill check against the soul binder’s magic skill defense or the attempt fails.
Even if the check is successful, the creature suffers an amount of permanent negative levels equal to half their Hit Dice (minimum 1), which wear off at a rate of one per day. When the last negative level from this effect wears off, the creature’s soul is no longer partially trapped.
Soul Bond (Su)
At 2nd level, the soul binder becomes attached to his captured creatures, at least magically. Whenever a captured soul would be reduced to 0 hit points, the soul binder can, as a free action, sacrifice any number of hit points. Each hit point sacrificed in this way prevents 1 point of damage done to the captured soul, allowing the captured soul to remain conscious. Additionally, the soul binder is aware of any conditions or afflictions that his captured creatures are under.
This replaces life link.
Expert Binder
At 4th level, the soul binder no longer needs to spend a spell point to capture the soul of a creature. Additionally, whenever a creature would die within 30 feet of the soul binder, he can capture the creature’s soul by spending a spell point as an immediate action.
This replaces shield ally.
Master Binder
At 12th level, the soul binder can have two captured soul’s summoned at one time.
This replaces greater shield ally.
Greater Soul Bond (Su)
At 14th level, whenever a captured soul would be reduced to 0 hit points, the soul binder may, as an immediate action, sacrifice any number of hit points from any captured soul he has summoned. Each hit point sacrificed in this way prevents 1 point of damage done to the captured soul, allowing them to remain conscious.
This replaces life bond.
Paragon of Souls
At 20th level, the soul binder gains complete mastery over the manipulation of souls. The soul binder can use one of the free (form) talents that his captured souls gain to grant them a single ability that the creature possessed when they were alive (this could be an ancient dragon’s breath weapon, a demilich’s telekinetic storm ability, etc.). The ability received is ultimately up to GM discretion, with the granted ability being worth roughly a little more than a normal talent.
This replaces twin eidolon.
